Everything We Know About DC’s BLACK ADAM Movie

For years now, rumblings have connected Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to the DC Comics character Black Adam. It seemed as though the superhero-sized actor was unofficially saving his genre debut for a project featuring the character. At first, it looked as though he might bring the hyper-powered antihero to life in Shazam! While the 2019 movie didn’t end up including the character, reports leading up to the film proclaimed that Black Adam would star in a spin-off. So here’s everything we know about the Black Adam movie coming down the pike!

What Is It About?

The film will function as a spin-off and sequel to Shazam! centered on the DC Comics villain/antihero Black Adam. Though the 2019 film set the pieces in play for a Black Adam movie, plot details at present are under wraps.

Who Will Star?

Alongside the Rock, Black Adam will feature the likes of Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, a.k.a. Albert Rothstein; Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate; Aldis Hodge as Hawkman; and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone. Additional actors, including Marwan Kenzari, have been cast in yet undisclosed roles.

Who Is Behind the Camera?

Director Jaume Collet-Serra—best known for horror projects like House of Wax and Orphan, as well as Liam Neeson action vehicles—will helm the project. Drafts of the script hail from the likes of Adam Sztykiel (Rampage and Scoob) and The Mauritanian screenwriters Sohrab Noshirvani and Rory Haines.

When Will It Release?

On Sunday, March 28, Dwayne Johnson hit Instagram with long-awaited news about the Black Adam movie’s release. (Early plans had the film coming out in December 2021; however, the COVID-19 pandemic prevented this possibility.) Johnson posted that the movie would be coming out on July 29, 2022.

However, there is no word yet on whether the film will debut in theaters exclusively or release concurrently on HBO Max, as has become customary given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As much is bound to change worldwide by summer 2022, we’ll have to wait for an answer to this question.

Why Is The Rock So Bent on a Black Adam Movie?

Back in 2019, The Rock shared a personal message on Instagram regarding his affection for this particular DC Comics character:

“Like most kids growing up, I dreamed about being a superhero. Having cool superpowers, fighting for what’s right and always protecting the people. It all changed for me when I was 10 years old and was first introduced to the greatest superhero of all time – SUPERMAN. As a kid, Superman was the hero I always wanted to be. But, a few years into my fantasy, I realized that Superman was the hero I could never be. I was too rebellious. Too rambunctious. Too resistant to convention and authority. Despite my troubles, I was still a good kid with a good heart – I just liked to do things my way. Now, years later as a man, with the same DNA I had as a kid – my superhero dreams have come true. I’m honored to join the iconic #DCUniverse and it’s a true pleasure to become BLACK ADAM.

BLACK ADAM is blessed by magic with the powers equal to SUPERMAN, but the difference is he doesn’t toe the mark or walk the line. He’s a rebellious, one of a kind superhero, who’ll always do what’s right for the people – but he does it his way. Truth and justice – the BLACK ADAM way. This role is unlike any other I’ve ever played in my career and I’m grateful to the bone we’ll all go on this journey together.”
