THE WITCHER: BLOOD ORIGIN Casts Its Leads

Season two of Netflix’s smash hit series The Witcher isn’t set to debut until next year, but the streaming platform is diving even deeper into the fantastical world. It just announced a limited prequel series set in the Elven world before human intrusion. Set 1200 years before Geralt of Rivia’s adventures throughout the continent, The Witcher: Blood Origin explores the long-forgotten tale of the first witchers. And now we know a little bit more about those monster hunting warriors. Queen & Slim star Jodie Turner-Smith and Vikings actor Laurence O’Fuarain will lead the series. Turner-Smith’s casting was first announced in January. She’ll play Éile, who Netflix describes as  “a fierce warrior with the voice of a goddess.” O’Fuarain, whose casting we learned about at Deadline, will play a warrior named Fjall.

According to Netflix, which confirmed Turner-Smith’s casting to Nerdist,

“Éile, an elite warrior blessed with the voice of a goddess, has left her clan and position as Queen’s guardian to follow her heart as a nomadic musician. A grand reckoning on the continent forces her to return to the way of the blade in her quest for vengeance and redemption.”

In a pair of tweets, The Witcher‘s official Twitter account described Fjall as,

“Born into a clan of warriors sworn to protect a King, Fjall carries a deep scar within, the death of a loved one who fell in battle trying to save him. A scar that won’t let him settle, or make peace with himself or the world around him. In his quest for redemption, Fjall will find himself fighting beside the most unlikely of allies as he carves a path of vengeance across a continent in turmoil.”

Declan de Barra will serve as showrunner and executive producer for the six-episode limited series. The Witcher’s showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is also executive producing. Andrzej Sapkowski, who wrote the The Witcher books, will consult on the series.

The Blood Origin announcement comes as the franchise dives deeper into witcher lore and the brotherhood. Season one focused on Geralt of Rivia’s lone witcher adventures. But season two will feature his mentor as well as other members of the witcher brotherhood.

From the official Netflix logline:

Set in an elven world 1200 years before the world of The Witcher, Blood Origin will tell a story lost to time – the origin of the very first Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal “conjunction of the spheres,” when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.

In a statement released by Netflix, de Barra said:

“As a lifelong fan of fantasy, I am beyond excited to tell the story The Witcher: Blood Origin. A question has been burning in my mind ever since I first read The Witcher books – What was the Elven world really like before the cataclysmic arrival of the humans? I’ve always been fascinated by the rise and fall of civilizations, how science, discovery, and culture flourish right before that fall. How vast swathes of knowledge are lost forever in such a short time, often compounded by colonization and a rewriting of history. Leaving only fragments of a civilization’s true story behind. The Witcher: Blood Origin will tell the tale of the Elven civilization before its fall, and most importantly reveal the forgotten history of the very first Witcher.”

Netflix has not yet announced the The Witcher: Blood Origin‘s release date.
