THE CONJURING 3 Trailer Brings the Devil to the Courtroom

The Conjuring franchise is a beast. According to Warner Bros., the horror films have grossed more than $1.8 billion worldwide. That includes the first two Conjuring films, the Annabelle spinoffs, and The Nun. Who knew that a film based on a pair of real-life paranormal investigators would spawn such a massive horror following?

Now, the third film in The Conjuring universe—The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It—has a spooky new trailer. Let’s check it out.

Here’s the synopsis:

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It reveals a chilling story of terror, murder and unknown evil that shocked even experienced real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. One of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they’d ever seen before, to mark the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense.

Like the other films in the franchise, this one reunites Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren. In real life, the couple investigated high-profile haunting cases, like The Amityville Horror house and the Enfield poltergeist. They’re also rather controversial figures, with many accusing them of sensationalizing their reports for fame and profit. That’s definitely a subject worthy of exploration. But The Conjuring pivoted away from reality pretty thoroughly, opting for big, fantastical studio horror. This new one looks like no exception.

The film is loosely based on the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, a Connecticut man who murdered his landlord in 1981. It was the first known court case in the United States where the defense sought to prove innocence on the basis of demonic possession. We can’t wait to see how the new movie reinvents this story it in bold, horrific new ways.

Michael Chaves directed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, taking over for James Wan. In addition to Wilson and Farmiga, the film stars Ruairi O’Connor, Julian Hilliard, and John Noble. It was originally set for release last fall, but will now hit theaters and HBO Max on June 4.
