Netflix continues to dish out content at lightning speed in pretty much every category. We love the sci-fi and anime front, obviously, but sometimes a good thriller does the trick. And there’s nothing that incites more mystery and curiosity than a teaser that tells you nothing. Just nebulous words and intense vibes. That’s what The Guilty, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, does in its new clip. The film, set for a September 24 limited theater release and Netflix arrival on October 1, sets up a scary situation.
In the teaser, Gyllenhaal’s Joe Baylor, a 911 dispatch phone operator, gets a call from a woman. All of the words appear on screen as they say them (quite the clever way to build suspense and make the clip accessible for Deaf/Hard of Hearing people). Baylor asks a woman what the address of her emergency is and she says she doesn’t know.
We hear a man yelling in the background to give him the phone. She tearfully says she was put into the back of a dark van, so she has no clue where she is or what’s going on. Baylor wants to know if she’s been abducted, she says yes, and the call cuts short. Baylor goes into a frenzy to send units right away. There’s overlapping chatter as the words come together to form Gyllenhaal’s face.

The Guilty’s logline reveals that Baylor will discover that nothing is what it seems (drama intensifies!) and facing the truth is the only way out. That leaves a lot of room for speculation. Does Baylor have a personal connection to this woman? What does the kidnapper want? Or, perhaps, is Baylor having to pay for something he’s done in the past? Maybe he isn’t really the good guy we think. Who knows? The only way to find out who is guilty and innocent is by tuning it when The Guilty drops.
