SCHITT’S CREEK Quote ‘Ew, David’ Haunts Dan Levy

Dan Levy feels incredibly grateful for Schitt’s Creek. The series, which he created with his father, the comedian Eugene Levy, has garnered love worldwide. Its final season swept the comedy category at the Primetime Emmys. So, Levy looks back very fondly on the show. But there is maybe one thing he doesn’t love about it. Namely, a particular phrase that’ll follow him for the rest of his life… “Ew, David.”

During a stop by Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote his new book Best Wishes, Warmest Regards: The Story of Schitt’s Creek—also co-written with Eugene Levy—the younger Levy shared his thoughts on the catchphrase. (We first saw this at Entertainment Weekly.) It’s one of many, many quotable lines from the series. Alexis Rose, played by Annie Murphy, of course, utters the phrase, and her delivery of “David” is nothing short of a fan favorite. But for Dan, he noted, “‘Ew’ is not necessarily something you want screamed at you in your most vulnerable time.” Fair enough.

It’s worth adding that while the particularly expressive delivery of the character is the subject of several hilarious internet compilations… The combination “Ew, David” is not repeated often. If anything, it makes a few appearances over six seasons. (The key to the running gag? Turning “David” into a two-syllable phrase.) But somehow, the “Ew” stuck.

In fact, it’s a giant sensation among Schitt’s Creek fans. So much so, Best Wishes, Warmest Regards has a whole two-page spread featuring the license plates featuring that particular phrase. And Dan told Kimmel that the images in the book are just some of the submissions sent in—the ones that met the criteria. So safe to say there are a lot of additional Schitt’s Creek-inspired license plates out in the wild.

It’s a good thing to keep in mind if you ever encounter Dan Levy out in the world. You could probably say a lot of (nice) things about Schitt’s Creek but maybe shy away from “Ew!” You can now purchase Best Wishes, Warmest Regards: The Story of Schitt’s Creek for more of the story.
