MOTHER/ANDROID Trailer Warns Us (Again) About the Machines

Movies have always warned us about machines. The Matrix franchiseThe Terminator franchise, some of our most popular films ever harp on this concept. But do we listen? No. Every day the machines become more powerful. And that can allow really amazing things to happen, of course. But we may end up pushing our luck. Hulu’s new movie Mother/Android once again brings us back to the moment where relying on machines goes very wrong.

A release for the movie shares:

Set in the near future, Mother/Android follows Georgia (Chloë Grace Moretz) and her boyfriend Sam (Algee Smith) through their treacherous journey of escape as their country is caught in an unexpected war with artificial intelligence. Days away from the arrival of their first child, they must face No Man’s Land – a stronghold of the android uprising, in hopes of reaching safety before giving birth.

And yes, the machines do seem like worthy, terrifying opponents. As a character aptly shares, “I’m fighting a war against an enemy that literally never sleeps.” But the true horror comes from the idea that Moretz’s character has to traverse large swathes of android-filled wilderness while pregnant. Could there be something more terrifying than trying to run while with child? It’s definitely a key part of what makes Rosemary’s Baby such an effective horror movie. And it has the same effect here. We’ll have to wait and see how the film leans into that aspect of it.

Could this secretly be some messiah-like child that will save them all? Otherwise, things are looking pretty bleak, birth or no birth. We know this movie will probably showcase the human spirit, but let’s be honest. If our tech turned on us, we’d all be toast.

We also enjoy that Boston remains the only stronghold of safety in the human world. It doesn’t seem like it’s the best strategic location. But we guess we will find out when Mother/Android comes to Hulu on December 17.
