In franchises that run as long as the MCU, actors develop a real bond with their characters. Tom Holland has worn the iconic Spidey suit since 2o16, so it comes as no surprise he really feels in-tune with Peter Parker. And this synergy paid off in the filming of the latest Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: No Way Home. Holland recently shared with GQ that he actually intervened in the character’s ultimate fate in the movie. In fact, Tom Holland helped rewrite Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s ending.
Holland recalls, “The crescendo scene, like, is this really f**king happening? It’s crazy. [But] I kept stopping and being like, ‘I’m so sorry, I just don’t believe what I’m saying.’”
In the end, Holland spoke with the director of the movie, Jon Watts, and told him, “It wasn’t me. The scene was wrong.” Holland further shares, “We sat down, we went through it, and we came up with a new idea. Then we pitched it to the writers, they rewrote it, and it works great.”
Especially since we don’t know what will become of Holland’s Peter Parker after Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s ending, this final scene could make all the difference. So we feel pretty good about Holland’s decisions to voice his concerns. Especially since we know what a big fan of Marvel and Spider-Man he personally is. If Holland didn’t like it, it probably wouldn’t have read right on-screen.
You have to admire that kind of commitment to a role. And the courage to say when things don’t feel right. Some might say it seems downright… heroic.
Holland applies a life lesson he learned from a co-star, WandaVision‘s Elizabeth Olsen, to this moment. He shares, “I actually learned this from Elizabeth Olsen,” he says. “She gave me an amazing piece of advice: ‘No’ is a full sentence. ‘No’ is enough.”
And that’s something we should all hold onto every day. Taking on the Sinister Six, that’s easy. Saying no, not so much. But it does make a difference. Spider-Man: No Way Home releases on December 17. We can’t wait to see Holland’s vision of the final scene.
