What a time to be alive. On Thursday, Studio Ghibli teased a partnership with Lucasfilm on Twitter. With a few seconds of video, they put fandom on high alert. Studio Ghibli and Star Wars? It’s a match made in heaven. The renowned animation studio didn’t share any details about the project, but on Friday, it pulled back the curtain a little more with a precious photo. The image shows a figurine of Grogu, a.k.a. Baby Yoda, in the foreground with none other than Hayao Miyazaki softly blurred in the background. So not only do we have a Studio Ghibli Lucasfilm project, we have a Hayao Miyazaki Grogu project. Is this real life?
The image of Miyazaki and Grogu made us melt. Then it made us speculate. We don’t have specifics about the story or format or anything, but we have guesses. Perhaps Miyazaki is making a short focused on Grogu for season two of the acclaimed Star Wars: Visions. The animated anthology series premiered its first season in fall 2021 and announced a second season at Star Wars Celebration.
We know season two of Visions will expand outside of Japan to see other cultural perspectives on Star Wars from different animation studios. (Please give me a Cartoon Saloon Star Wars short). But the Miyazaki Grogu project doesn’t have to be a Visions story. At Star Wars Celebration, Visions executive producer James Waugh also said “there will be more anime Star Wars expressions in the future.” He made it sound like that was separate from Visions season two.
That’s all to say, we could be looking a full Miyazaki Star Wars animated film. Grogu, first introduced in The Mandalorian, has a few fans. We could picture Miyazaki telling an impossibly sweet Grogu story—just imagine the animation!
Whatever Star Wars story Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli are working on, we can’t wait to see it. Please tease more soon, Studio Ghibli.
