The 2023 Academy Award nominations are out, and like every year, there’s both reason to celebrate and reason to complain. For example, Everything Everywhere All at Once leads the way with 11 nods. (Yay!) However, Jordan Peele’s terrific and thought-provoking Nope came up completely empty. (Booo!) But it’s more fun to focus on the positive, and the best way to do that is by actually watching the movies and performances honored by the Academy. And since we are Nerdist, after all, we’re here to help you find the movies that most speak to us. Here’s where you can stream and watch all of the nerdy 2023 movies that earned Oscar nominations.
Everything Everywhere All At Once – Stream on Showtime
This year’s top Oscar dog, Everything Everywhere All at Once garnered a whopping 11 nominations in this universe alone! That includes four in acting categories (Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, Jamie Lee Curtis), as well as recognition for Best Film and Best Director. If you want to see what made this journey through the multiverse so worthy of all this love, you can find Everything Everywhere All at Once at Showtime. You can also rent a digital copy or get it on Blu-ray. This was definitely on of our favorite movies to watch this year and we’re glad the Oscars saw it that way too.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Stream on Disney+ (Starting February 1)
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever nabbed the franchise another five Oscar nominations. That includes one in the category of Best Supporting Actress for the legendary Angela Bassett. You can see her as Queen Ramonda when the emotional film comes to Disney+ on February 1st. It also arrives on Blu-ray and will be available to rent digitally starting February 7.
Avatar: The Way of Water – Watch in Theaters
“Can you name a character from Avatar? Maybe you can, maybe you can’t. But everyone knows James Cameron only directs billion-dollar blockbusters. Like its predecessor, Avatar: The Way of Water is raking in billions while also nabbing a Best Picture nomination, one of four it picked up. If you want to see why you’ll have to head to theaters where it’s still printing money. (Though the original Avatar is available to stream on Disney+ if you need a Pandora fix from your couch.)
The Batman – Stream on HBO Max
We can’t believe Michael Giacchino didn’t grab another Best Score nomination for The Batman, but Robert Pattinson’s turn as Bruce Wayne still garnered three on the technical side. You can see why Matt Reeves’ film about the dark knight deserved the Oscar’s spotlight on HBO Max, where the movie is currently available to stream. (Though with how things are going at that site who knows how long that will be true.) The Oscars better watch themselves in dark alleys if they don’t reward this superheroic movie.
Top Gun: Maverick – Stream on Paramount+
Tom Cruise didn’t get a Best Actor nomination for his return as Pete Mitchell. Instead, he’ll have to “settle” for a Best Picture nomination as a producer on Top Gun: Maverick. That’s one of six the legacy sequel nabbed from the Academy. If you missed Top Gun: Maverick in theaters you can stream it on Paramount+, on Blu-ray, or with a digital rental.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery – Stream on Netflix
Benoit Blanc didn’t need an iPad, but he’s probably pretty happy about what the Academy gave Glass Onion writer-director Rian Johnson. He’s up for Best Adapted Screenplay for the murder-mystery franchise’s second film. Will he take home the award? Will it turn out he’s secretly after another one? Or is that suggestion dumb? To find out what the hell we’re talking about, watch Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery on Netflix.
Turning Red – Stream on Disney+
Another year of Academy Award nominations means another year of Pixar being up for a golden statue. The delightful and touching coming-of-age story earned a nomination for Best Animated Feature Film. It sometimes feels like Pixar has a hereditary right to winning this Oscars category, but the movie deserves recognition on its own merits. Find out why by watching Turning Red at Disney+.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio – Stream on Netflix
When he wasn’t busy scaring us in 2022, Guillermo del Toro was busy sharing his version of a classic tale. Now his stop-motion Pinocchio has a chance to write another chapter in its own story. The movie is also up for Best Animated Feature Film. You don’t have to make a wish to watch this Oscar-nominated movie, though. Just tune into Netflix, the streamer this movie calls home.
The Sea Beast – Stream on Netflix
Adventure on the high seas? Legendary monsters? Gorgeous animation? Karl Urban? Pretty easy to see why The Sea Beast was one of our favorite animated films of the year and why it will be up for an Oscar this year. If you want to get on board with this fantastic film before the Academy Awards you can set sail with Netflix.
And you have time to watch all of these nerdy Oscar-worthy movies and Nope (available on Peacock) too. The 2023 Academy Awards air March 12 on ABC.
