First NIMONA Teaser Twists Fairy Tales in the Best Way

Writer and artist ND Stevenson’s Nimona started as a webcomic on Tumblr in 2012. The story about a shapeshifter who usually takes the form of a human girl was once destined to become an animated feature film from 20th Century Fox Animation. However, it was delayed repeatedly and then canceled, even though the movie was 75% complete. But Netflix circled back and picked up Nimona in April 2022, and now, finally, we have a release date and a teaser. It looks like the punk fairy tale story we need.

The synopsis for Nimona is short and sweet:

A knight framed for a terrible crime turns to a shape-shifting teenage girl to prove his innocence. But what if she’s the monster he’s sworn to destroy?

What if, indeed? We can see in the teaser Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz) has a mischievous nature. Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed) likely doesn’t know what he’s getting himself into when he asks for Nimona’s help.

The glimpse above doesn’t show much in the way of the story, but it does give you an idea of Nimona‘s tone and style. It sets Nimona up to punch traditional fairy tales and use bold visuals. We’re always eager for animation that just might do something different, and it looks like Nimona will deliver.

Nimona arrives on Netflix on June 30.
