You know what I really love? When a teaser trailer is exactly what it says it is. The “go girl, give us nothing” energy of a few clips woven together in 90 seconds or less is great. I want just enough to pique my interest but certainly not the whole story. The teaser trailer for Ferrari, starring Adam Driver, does this well, focusing on the familiar sounds of a Formula 1 car. It’s not the first time that this famous racer’s story is coming to the big screen but seeing Adam Driver look unrecognizable as Enzo Ferrari is piquing a lot of interest.
There’s very little dialogue and a lot of driving action. Yet there’s ample tension that builds up until the end of the Ferrari trailer. We also get to see Penélope Cruz, who stars as Ferrari’s wife Laura. Here’s a brief synopsis for Ferrari:
It is the summer of 1957. Behind the spectacle of Formula 1, ex-racer Enzo Ferrari is in crisis. Bankruptcy threatens the factory he and his wife, Laura built from nothing ten years earlier. Their volatile marriage has been battered by the loss of their son, Dino a year earlier. Ferrari struggles to acknowledge his son Piero with Lina Lardi. Meanwhile, his drivers’ passion to win pushes them to the edge as they launch into the treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy, the Mille Miglia.
Ferrari is directed by Michael Mann with Troy Kennedy Martin penning the script. The story is based on the book Enzo Ferrari: The Man, The Cars, The Races, The Machine by Brock Yates. In addition to Driver and Cruz, the film also stars Shailene Woodley, Sarah Gordon, Gabriel Leone, Jack O’Connell, and Patrick Dempsey. Ferrari hits theaters on December 25 a.k.a. Christmas Day. Between this and House of Gucci, Driver is just making a career out of playing famous Italians. Weird.
