Let’s face it: almost every fairy tale has a very dark story at its heart—even the ones whose retellings include songs and pretty gowns. But these days, fairy tale movies are embracing their twisted roots more than ever. That’s certainly true of Netflix’s Damsel movie starring Stranger Things‘ Millie Bobby Brown. This dark fairy tale story is all about what happens when happily ever after is just one big lie to get you to sacrifice yourself for the greater good. (Since, of course, the royal family doesn’t want to get their own hands dirty or put their lives at risk.) Millie Bobby Brown begins Damsel, as, well, a damsel, swept away by the promise of romance and happiness, but pretty soon, a dragon enters that equation, and things start to change. Luckily, if the movie’s first trailer is any indication, Millie Bobby Brown’s Damsel is ready to transform as well. Take a look at the teaser for the movie below.
The First Trailer for Netflix’s Damsel Has Arrived
This Damsel trailer is really giving us strong Yellowjackets vibes. And that’s a good thing. Although Millie Bobby Brown’s character begins her time in the dragon lair in a full gown and afraid, she quickly understands that she’ll have to adapt to the situation if she’s going to survive. That means losing the long sleeves and picking up the sword. Based on Damsel‘s trailer, we feel her killer instinct might be about to come out. Could she go from hunted to hunter? We bet that’s pretty likely. Hopefully, she manages to befriend the dragon and turn the tables on her betrayers. That’d be a pretty good twist.
A synopsis for Damsel released alongside the trailer shares more about the movie’s plot. It notes:
A dutiful damsel agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to find the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. Thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, she must rely on her wits and will to survive.
When Is Damsel‘s Release Date on Netflix?
Those excited about this fairy tale movie will have to wait a little longer to know exactly when they can watch it. Netflix has confirmed that Damsel will release on Netflix in 2024, but the movie does not yet have a specific official release date.
