Have a cough? You might try a cough drop. Have a cold? Maybe you’ll have some soup. Neither of these things is remotely controversial. In fact, they are as reasonable as any acts get. But put these two things together and what do you get? Total, illogical chaos. And that specific chaos comes in the form of Progresso’s all-new, very real Soup Drops, chicken noodle soup lozenges.
General Mills has announced (in bizarre news we first heard at FoodBeast) it has developed a product they claim is meant for the sick during National Soup Month. The company is releasing its first-ever limited-edition Progresso Soup Drops. No, that’s not just some clever name for a sneaky sweet treat. These are called exactly what they are. As the press release says, “It’s soup you can suck on.” Soup in the form of a lozenge. Soup lozenges. No, sorry, Soup Drops.
I don’t know, man. There really aren’t rules anymore, so I guess there’s nothing stopping General Mills from selling these. It’s not like I wouldn’t try them. Once.
In a statement MC Comings, VP, Business Unit Director for Progresso at General Mills, made the case for this product’s existence. “For decades, Progresso Soup has brought you cozy comfort on chilly days or when you’re under the weather. When you’re sick, nothing is truly more reassuring than Chicken Noodle Soup. So, we thought, why stop at the soup bowl? We took the beloved flavors of our Progresso Chicken Noodle Soup and packed them into a fun, savory candy Soup Drop for a totally new way to enjoy the taste you love whenever and wherever you want.”
Someone really excited for a butterscotch hard candy is in for the worst culinary moment of their life…
As of right now these are sold out. But the official Soup Drops website says to check back on Thursday, January 30 at 9 am ET. That will be the last day to nab some. If you’re lucky your order ($2.49 plus 99 cents shipping) will come in a can “that looks just like the iconic Progresso Soup can with 20 individually wrapped candies.” Each order will also include a can of Progresso Traditional Chicken Noodle Soup in case Soup Drops make you sick and you need actual soup to feel better.
Eating a can of soup will be the single more normal, reasonable, logica; thing anyone who buys Soup Drops will do.
