One of the big surprises of Peacemaker season two’s sixth episode was the return of Superman’s Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Rick Flag (Frank Grillo) visits him in Belle Reve prison to get his help in his current search for the Quantum Unfolding Chamber. He doesn’t offer him any kind of parole, at least not yet. But he does offer him something else—a shot at redemption. And this leads us to Man of Tomorrow, the 2027 Superman sequel that will see Lex and the Man of Steel team up to defeat a bigger enemy. Here’s what Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter about Flag and Luthor’s relationship going forward.
Well, I would say one of the important things is Flag and Luthor’s relationship. It continues into Man of [Tomorrow], yeah. It definitely continues. Their relationship is a part of the DCU going forward.
Our theory is that Flag will need Luthor’s scientific expertise to end this apocalyptic alien threat, which is likely Brainiac. And he’ll be so desperate, he’ll even arrange for a full pardon for Lex if he succeeds. Which, with Superman’s help, of course, he will. If the comics are any indication, a significant portion of the population will hail Luthor as a hero. Afterward, Lex will run for U.S. President under an anti-alien platform. All of this occurred in the Superman comics around the year 2000.

Eventually, Lex Luthor became President, despite serving prison sentences for a number of serious felonies. This includes one event he masterminded that caused a large-scale cataclysm in Metropolis. It all seemed very far-fetched in 2000, but not so much in 2025. Luthor’s continued criminal activity well into his presidency, and eventually, Superman and Batman exposed him once more, and it was back to prison for Lex. We would definitely not be shocked if this is where Gunn takes the DCU in the coming years when it comes to Luthor’s storyline.
