Before IT: Welcome to Derry’s triumphant arrival on HBO Max, its creators Andy and Barbara Muschietti told everyone about their ultimate plans for this series. There is a planned three season arc that will take us into the past to explore three specific Pennywise cycles: 1962, 1935, and 1908. Each season will go back 27 years to dig into Derry’s history and uncover new truths about Pennywise. Right now, we are obviously in 1962 as Lilly, Ronnie, Will, and Rich are on a mission to reveal the truth about what’s happening to kids. But, in episode three, Welcome to Derry gave us a glimpse into its future seasons, specifically season three, with a look back to 1908.
The episode opens at a sideshow not too far from Derry. A kid, whom we’d later discover is General Francis Shaw, goes into a house of horrors and encounters a ghastly man. We know that Pennywise is at play, thanks to a very obvious sighting of a clown sitting near red balloons. Later on, Francis makes friends with Rose, the Native American second hand shop owner we’ve met before. Francis spends his summer with Rose, but things nearly turn to tragedy one day when he runs off into nearby woods.
He encounters an image of that man once again and it begins to chase him through the woods. Rose risks her life and saves Francis with the slingshot that he gave her. She tells him that the entity doesn’t leave the woods and explains what they know about it. Rose also tells him that once he leaves Derry to go off with his father that he’d probably forget about his experience there. And that’s what happens to him while Rose doesn’t forget, which affected her deeply.
“I think she misses him and he was her first love and she’s never had another romance since,” actress Kimberly Guerrero told Nerdist. “Because when he left, it left such a huge hole in her heart… even at that age, she understood that she was called to be a protector, to be a warrior, to be a carrier of this ancestral knowledge, and that duty came first. She had such a deep understanding of that and she realized I cannot allow someone into my heart in that way. She never, ever again had another romance. So Francis occupies that part of her heart. I think she thinks back on those days fondly, but I think it also cements her duty to her calling.”
The pair reunite years later in 1962, but they are on two sides of a major conflict. Francis now wants to find the exact location of the entity to use it as a weapon in war. Meanwhile, Rose wants to protect not only sacred land, but to also keep Derry and its surrounding areas safe from what could happen if the military does something incredibly stupid.
It’s pretty plausible that we will see more of young Rose along with other kids in the area in Welcome to Derry season three. And, there’s certainly much more to explore with that sideshow. In a vision, Dick Hallorann sees a sideshow cart with Pennywise and a clown face on the outside. The cart opens and a voice questions what he’s doing there. So, there’s obviously a connection to that sideshow and why IT decided to take on that Pennywise form.
Additionally, we also get more hints about the 1935 cycle, which would be the setting of Welcome to Derry season two. We learn that the Cadillac car found buried with bodies in it at the end of episode two belonged to Al Bradley, the leader of the Bradley gang. A huge shootout took place downtown and they were all killed in the chaos.
And, according to Fuller, the entity was spotted there in one of its forms. This comes from the IT novels and even appears in the show’s opening credits. That means if the show gets another season, we will meet the Bradley gang and likely witness that violent day in downtown Derry. It’s pretty exciting to see how all three planned seasons are blending together and hopefully we will get to see it all come to fruition.
