About a week before the release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, we learned that Fox McCloud from Nintendo’s Star Fox game series would appear in the film. Moreover, Glen Powell (Top Gun Maverick, loads of other things) would voice the character. Made a ton of sense, given the fighter pilot swag Powell clearly had. In fact, if you have read the reports, Powell specifically contacted filmmakers with his desire to portray Fox. That explains why the actor is in the movie, but how, in-universe, do McCloud and his trademark Arwing find themselves in the same space (ha) as Mario?
The paths of our heroes diverge a bit, as Peach and Toad head off to rescue Rosalina, leaving Mario and Luigi to defend Mushroom Kingdom. Peach and Toad end up at Gateway Galaxy and need to find some passage to where they’re going. There they happen upon the perfect answer: brash space pilot Fox McCloud. In what is easily the best little bit in the movie, Fox relays how he came to this universe.
Fox explains that he and his Arwing got zapped through a dimensional rift. It’s really that simple. What makes it so entertaining is that the flashback appears in the form of 2-D, anime/comic book-style animation. In it, we see other Star Fox characters, Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare, and Slippy Toad. Fox even throws shade at the latter, saying it’s no wonder he got lost, his navigator is a toad. Womp womp.
At the end of the movie, just as easily, Fox says Rosalina found a way for him to get home. He then zooms off in his Arwing. Honestly, if Nintendo wanted to make a Star Fox movie, this is the perfect way to do it. Or, just do it like Nerdist, using real animals.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is in theaters now.
