In 1982 when Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner came out, the year 2019 felt like a distant science fiction year. Well, if you didn’t realize, this year is 2026, so sci-fi needs a much further date. Let’s jump 80 years later with Prime Video’s upcoming new series, Blade Runner 2099. Created by Shining Girls showrunner Silka Luisa, this new live-action series will follow Michelle Yeoh as a Replicant at the end of her life cycle. Hunter Schafer plays a human now very much on the outs of society. Can they get along in the city?!
Prime showcased the series during their Hall H panel on Friday of San Diego Comic-Con 2026. We got a look at the show via a brand new teaser, plus a release date. November 25, 2026.
We learned from the panel that, by the time of the series, a war between Replicants and humans has happened, with Replicants emerging victorious. That’s a very different version of the world from the previous two movies and the other spinoff material. Schafer plays Cora, a human resistance fighter, opposite Yeoh’s Olwen, who seems to understand the human’s desire to reestablish themselves. However, as she asserts, “it’s our time.”
The official synopsis of the show is as follows:
Fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, Los Angeles has been reborn, just not by humanity. Cora, a fugitive in a final bid to stop running, takes on one last identity: a Blade Runner. Forced to partner with Olwen, a Replicant days from dying, she hunts down a runaway hiding a truth that could collapse their fragile city.
The panel in Hall H had Luisa, Yeoh, and Schafer joining executive producers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. Kosove told the crowd that the show has a daunting task of following on from Ridley Scott and Denis Villeneuve. He also shared that, while Blade Runner 2099 is a direct follow-up to those movies, it won’t be all inside baseball. The story, focusing on the battery of Olwen and Cora, will not require any foreknowledge.
We also got to see a scene from the show which was just for people in the Hall.
Cora is pinned down and tied to a chair, bleeding. Someone turns her upside down and hoses her off, brought back upright as replicant Michelle Yeoh comes in. She turns the chair turns so they face one another. Olwen says prisoner transfers usually struggle but Cora didn’t bother. It’s like she’s meant to be here, no soul in her. So, Olwen asks, why did she let something weaker hurt her? Cora had never killed anything, now she has, can she do it again?, Cora says yes, Olwen doesn’t believe her.
Can’t wait to see where this goes when Blade Runner 2099 premieres November 25, 2026.
