The Vampire Lestat is a season full of music. Between catchy earworms, heartbreaking ballads, and some of the most gorgeous orchestral work you can imagine, composer Daniel Hart outdoes himself in this chapter of the series. And as is so often the case on our screens, and is especially the case in The Vampire Lestat, music also plays as much of a role as dialogue when it comes to relationships between characters. As The Vampire Lestat comes to a close, fans felt curious to know whether Devil’s Minion, the romance that takes place between Armand and Daniel, had received a musical theme of its own in this latest batch of episodes. The Vampire Lestat composer shares on Twitter that there’s “no obvious Devil’s Minion musical theme in The Vampire Lestat,” but there is “the beginning inkling of a theme in one scene between Daniel and Armand.”
In full, The Vampire Lestat‘s composer, Daniel Hart, said the following about the presence/absence of an Armand and Daniel love theme. In response to a fan asking after a Devil’s Minion musical theme while The Vampire Lestat was still airing, Hart revealed, “There was no satisfying answer to this question. And any answer I could give at the time was some form of spoiler. There isn’t an obvious Devil’s Minion musical theme in The Vampire Lestat, because their relationship hasn’t developed enough in our show. So anything I would have written would have been incomplete, and, knowing that, I chose to wait. Yes, there is the beginning inkling of a theme in one scene between Daniel and Armand. And yes, that will be on the score OST. But no, I wouldn’t call it their theme.”
So it’s good news/bad news for fans of Devil’s Minion who wanted to hear a musical theme for the pair. On the one hand, no Armand and Daniel love theme yet. On the other, Hart notes that he “chose to wait” and “there is a beginning inkling of a theme” in The Vampire Lestat. “Wait” and “Beginning” do feel like directional words that imply something more is coming! You wait for something, and if there’s a beginning, hopefully there’s a middle. (But no end, please!)
Ultimately, Hart’s vision of why there isn’t yet a Devil’s Minion theme matches with what we’ve seen so far in the series. Armand and Daniel are on a slow burn. In The Vampire Lestat, there are ardent love confessions and mutual beheadings—there’s certainly fascination. But as Assad Zaman and Eric Bogosian told me earlier in the season, “How does a love manifest itself? We’re a work in progress. // We’re working on it.” And as Zaman reiterated after the finale, “There’s always room in season four, I think. There’s a lot of room” for exploring what love between these two vampires means. Ultimately, when we get a Devil’s Minion love theme, we’d like it to be for a developed relationship.
And that brings us back to “the beginning inkling of a theme in one scene between Daniel and Armand.” Where does that inkling appear? Well, The Vampire Lestat OST will be available beginning on August 21. And if we check out the track listings on the score, we find one titled “The Rothko Chapel.” The Rothko Chapel, is, of course, the place where Armand guided Daniel so he could mourn his relationship with his daughter in peace. And so, this Armand and Daniel-inspired track seems like a likely candidate for where a Devil’s Minion theme could live in The Vampire Lestat‘s soundtrack. (Although we don’t count out “Hi Dad.”)
And indeed, as we listen through that scene again, focusing on the music rather than the very distracting conversation on our screens, we can definitely hear the beginning of… something beautiful, hovering at the edges.
Inklings for now, but hopefully a whole evening at the orchestra later for Armand and Daniel. Season four of The Vampire Lestat WILL be called Queen of the Damned, after all. And, of course, the Devil’s Minion chapter lives in Anne Rice’s book Queen of the Damned. We can’t wait to see what Daniel Hart will create when the time is right.
