THE LONG WALK Exclusive Image Reveals the Quiet Terror Lurking in this Stephen King Movie

The Long Walk will be marching into our theaters soon. This highly anticipated movie adaptation of Stephen King’s first-ever written novel brings us a whole new kind of dystopia to add to our nightmares. This time, it’s a quiet one. Quietly harrowing. The Long Walk brings to life an unsettling story that other tales we know well have likely borrowed from, including The Hunger Games and Squid Game. But unlike these other titles full of horrible spectacle, The Long Walk strips us down to nothing but the simple horror, of, well, a long walk. But is there anything worse than taking something as mundane as walking and turning it into the stuff of terror? Of course, The Long Walk is a story of friendship, too, of heart, and humanity. And somehow, in our new, exclusive image from The Long Walk, every single one of these elements comes to life before our eyes. You can take a look at this new still below, as you get ready for The Long Walk to release in movie theaters on September 12.

Even from this single still, we can tell this movie will pour everything it has into every scene. Here we see the juxtaposition between the beauty of the sunset and the horror that we know hovers over every step the boys take. The evening is lovely, the road serene and quiet, but the boys know every step could be their last. Of course, as we can see from this exclusive image from The Long Walk movie, the weight of the walk doesn’t turn the boys against one another, necessarily. Instead, we can see that friendships form on the way, and the company on the road provides some solace. It’s sheer brutality, but there’s a beauty of spirit that seeps in through the cracks.

In The Long Walk movie, 100 young men, but, really, boys, from a dystopian United States are elected to compete in the longest stroll of their lives. The conceit is simple. Walk, walk, and walk some more. But if you slow down beyond a specific pace, you receive three warnings, and boom. The death of an innocent shatters the “peace” of the walk. And just like that, a simple act becomes a death sentence in this Stephen King adaptation. The walking continues until only one boy remains, and that boy gets to have a wish granted.

The walk up U.S. Route 1 is televised, and the boys are followed by Mark Hamill (in his villain era), who plays The Major, the leader of a totalitarian regime that’s in charge of the contest. The idea is to prove that if you just put enough grit and determination into your work, you too can succeed. But, of course, it’s not really an amazing feat of human strength; it’s just barbaric and tragic. Seeing the boys in The Long Walk movie image and trailer, we know almost none of them, if not all but one of them, will survive. And yet, we can’t help but root for them, as they can’t help but root for one another.
