Childhood friends Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have a long and impressive track record on screen together. You’d think after decades of being in each others’ live both personally and professional they’d be able to trust one another completely. But in their next cinematic foray trust will be in short supply while danger is everywhere. The first intense trailer for Netflix’s The Rip sends the Massachusetts natives to Miami for a police raid gone wrong. They just don’t know who it’s going wrong for and why.
You’d think finding $20 million in cash inside the walls of a rundown home would be a real bonanza for cops whose entire job is about finding illicit money. Yet that shocking discovery is anything but a boon in this first heart-thumping look at The Rip. Here’s the film’s official synopsis from Netflix:
Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.

The Rip comes from writer-director Joe Carnahan (The A-Team, The Grey). He told Netflix’s Tudum the film is an extension of the cop film genre and that its DNA can be found in “Serpico, Prince of the City, and Michael Mann’s Heat.” It also stars Teyana Taylor, Steven Yeun, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Kyle Chandler, Scott Adkins, and Sasha Calle.
So who are the good guys going to be? Could the answer be none of them? At least one of these people is going to leave us all devastated. “If the audience falls in love with the characters, you got them,” Carnahan told Tudum, “Because at some point you’re going to get your heart broken, you just don’t know by whom.”
Maybe Matt Damon will betray Ben Affleck. Maybe Ben will betray Matt. Or maybe they’ll each betray the other. Whatever their fate, the breaking of hearts will commence on January 16, 2026 at Netflix.
