I saw Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness 15 months ago. I’m still not sure how I feel about it. My mixed feelings wouldn’t stop me from rewatching it again right now because I loved both of its stars. Lanthimos got amazing performances from two of my favorites in the film, Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone. Now the three are reuniting again for Bugonia. And the film’s latest trailer makes it look just as weird as Kinds of Kindness. Only—somehow—with an even more outrageous premise.
Plemons and Stone could read the phonebook together for five hours and we’d pay to watch. However, we’re much more excited to see them acting in this film about “two conspiracy obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.”
We’re fully committing to this prediction right now: Plemons conspiracy-obsessed character is right and Emma Stone is playing an alien. Obviously we want that to be true, because no one in Hollywood is better suited to play a powerful CEO who is secretly an intergalactic invader. But we believe his suspicion will prove correct because it’s also the exact kind of strange twist we’ve come to expect from Lanthimos (The Lobster, Poor Things).

Bugonia comes from writer Will Tracy (The Menu, Succession). It also stars Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone. It arrives in select theaters on October 24. Bugonia then arrives everywhere on Halloween, October 31. (Another reason to think this is really an alien invasion story!) Those who attend Focus Features new one-day film festival on October 18 will get to see an early screening.
If you do go to FocusFest and find out that lady really is a bug don’t tell us before we get to see it.
